The BA-TUBE Respiratory Resistance Therapy Device from Schill Medical GmbH has been specially developed for use by patients with chronic bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary emphysema and cystic fibrosis. In post operative or immobilised patients, the BA-TUBE is used to prevent atelectasis, a condition in which a whole lung or a part of it is collapsed or without air.
The BA-TUBE is simple to operate and can be used anytime and anywhere - outdoors, indoors, at work or at home. The user simply selects the resistance level against which he or she exhales. The resistance to exhaling leads to the build up of positive expiratory pressure (PEP) within the mouth. The positive expiratory pressure (PEP) extends from the oral cavity further to the lungs, where it acts like an invisible splint, preventing bronchial collapse.
Experience with the BE-TUBE respiratory therapy device at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden has shown that patients using the BA-TUBE accepted the device readily and used it more frequently than other PEP (positive respiratory pressure) aids. The BA-TUBE helped to relieve dyspnoea and reduced breathing frequency. Improved mucus transportation and expectoration were also observed. BA-TUBE was found to be a valuable aid that complemented medical and physiotherapy treatments of patients with chronic COPD.
